Rajib Shaw, Fuad Mallick, Aminul Islam
R6,370 Discovery Miles 63 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book outlines disaster risk reduction (DRR) approaches in Bangladesh, drawing examples and lessons from the national and community-level programs, projects, and relevant experiences of the country. The content is based on a selection of available documents, a consultative workshop with academicians from different universities undertaking DRR higher education programs, and the editors' own knowledge and experience in the field. Special emphasis is given to analyzing field experiences from academic perspectives, and to highlighting key issues and the policy relevance of disaster risk reduction. The book has three parts: Part I provides the outline and basics of DRR, with examples from a global review and from national policies and priorities. Part II covers seven different hazards in Bangladesh, focusing on both shocks and stresses. Part III provides examples of approaches and issues of DRR practices. The primary target groups for this book are students and researchers in the fields of environment, disaster risk reduction, and climate change studies. The book will provide them with a good idea of the current trend of research in the field and will furnish basic knowledge on this important topic in Bangladesh. Another target group comprises practitioners and policy makers, who will be able to apply collective knowledge to policy and decision making.

Digital Divide among University Students in Bangladesh (Paperback): MD Aminul Islam, MD Satil Siraj, Md Mashihur Rahman Digital Divide among University Students in Bangladesh (Paperback)
MD Aminul Islam, MD Satil Siraj, Md Mashihur Rahman
R1,063 Discovery Miles 10 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a broader understanding of the new form social inequality -- the digital divide -- from the context of Bangladesh, a developing nation in South Asia. Emphasis was given to reveal the dimensions, patterns and stages of the phenomena among university students in the country. Since 1990s, academics and researchers began to argue that these promises are fulfilled only to those with access and competence to use these new technologies, because with adoption of those technologies existing social stratification and relations began to reproduce in an uneven way. The digital divide is such a pinpointing concept that helps to understand the social impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs). It is a complex phenomenon which has social, cultural, economical, technological, and educational as well as political dimensions.

The hybrid SG-18 x SG-01 produced the highest number of fruits per plant and fruit yield per plant followed by SG-04 x SG-26. The hybrid SG-04 x SG-26 took minimum days to produce female flower. Both positive and negative mid parent and better parent heterosis was obtained for different characters of hybrids of which few hybrids showed desirable and significant values. The highest mid parent heterosis in negative direction (-9.66%) was found for days to first male flower in hybrid SG-06 x SG-18 and for days to first female flower opening in hybrid SG-04 x SG-26 (-9.30%). The hybrids SG-01 x SG-18, SG-04 x SG-26, SG-06 x SG-18, SG-06 x SG-25, SG-18 x SG-01 and SG-18 x SG-25 showed significant desirable mid parent heterosis for number of fruits per plant, and SG-04x SG-26, SG-06 x SG-18, SG-06 x SG-25, and SG-18 x SG-25 showed better parent heterosis. Four hybrids (SG-04 x SG-26, SG-06 x SG-18, SG-06 x SG-25 and SG-18 x SG-25) exhibited significant and desirable level of both mid and better parent heterosis for number of fruits per plant. The hybrids SG-04 x SG-26, SG-06 x SG-18, SG-06 x SG-25 and SG-18 x SG-25 could be identified as promising combination for commercial cultivation.

Test crosses of 21 germplasms of Brassica napus with two CMS lines (Z1 and Z2) were done for identification of maintainer lines. The test cross progenies were grown in the research field, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during winter season. The test cross results indicated that there was a wide variation among the genotypes in respect of flowering characters along with yield and yield attributes. Anther and stamen of pollen parents were larger as compare to CMS line and its test cross progenies. In case of CMSZ1 and CMSZ2 first flower opened at 36.67 and 32.33 days after sowing, respectively. The genotypes Nap206, Nap205, Nap2037 and Nap9904 were identified as effective maintainer for CMSZ1 and Nap206, Nap108, Nap205, Nap9908, Nap9905, Nap9904 and BARI Sarisha-8 for CMSZ2 as they produced 100 percent male sterile progeny in full sib generation. From the investigation, it was observed that all the male sterile progenies produced small and slender anther with short filament as well as the smallest stamen.

In the radiation detection system, amplifier is needed from very begging to the end. The first stage in the signal processing chain is the pre-amplifier. This pre-amplifier is usually located as close as possible to the detector to avoid noise pick-up in cables. In the next stage there is the main amplifier. Therefore, amplifier is the most important parts of the nuclear radiation detection system. In this research work a scintillation amplifier has been designed to meet the various requirements in radiation measurement. There are five basic units, which constitute the scintillation amplifier. It is also concerned with the design and construction of scintillation amplifier incorporating the source buffer, pole zero cancellation circuit, a voltage amplifier, a base line restorer circuit and an emitter buffer to give output. To supply power to these circuits a 12 V dc stabilized power supply has been also designed.

Integration or Compromise? (Paperback): Aminul Islam Integration or Compromise? (Paperback)
Aminul Islam
R1,282 Discovery Miles 12 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The purpose of this study was to examine the acculturation strategies among the Bangladeshi immigrants in Malmo and London, difference preferences across generations and between the two cities, and how acculturation preferences play out different socio-cultural domains. The sample comprised 22 immigrants (11 from London and 11 from Malmo). Data were obtained using questioners. The results were found on the basis of Berry's (1997) four fold acculturation model and on the basis of a new classification developed by Lathi, Liebkind, Horenczyk and Schmitz (2002). Responses of the Questioners revealed that integration was the most preferred strategy when using Barry's original model both in Malmo and London. However, when integration was sub-classified according to their second preference using Lathi et al. typology, the tendency towards integration became pronounced in Malmo. This tendency became more pronounced when one examined generational aspect using five socio-cultural domains. Acculturation preference and integration strategies were more homogeneous in Malmo, also when the generation dimension was taken into account than London.

Two Component Injecton Moulding For Moulded Interconnect Devices (Paperback): Aminul Islam Two Component Injecton Moulding For Moulded Interconnect Devices (Paperback)
Aminul Islam
R2,059 Discovery Miles 20 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The moulded interconnect devices (MIDs) contain huge possibilities for many applications in electro- mechanical-systems because of their potential in reducing the number of components, process steps and finally in miniaturization of the product. Among the available MID process chains, two component (2k) injection moulding is one of the most industrially adaptive processes. However, the use of two component injection moulding for MID fabrication, with circuit patterns in sub-millimeter range, is still a big challenge. This book searches for the technical difficulties associated with the process and makes attempts to overcome those challenges. In search of suitable polymer materials for MIDs, potential materials are characterized in terms of polymer-polymer bond strength, polymer- polymer interface quality and selective metallization. The experimental results find the factors which can control the quality of 2k moulded parts and metallized MIDs. This book presents documented knowledge about MID process chains, 2k moulding and selective metallization which can valuable source of information for both academic and industrial users.
